MLS (major league soccer) is the top tier of soccer in the United States of America is growing quickly. Major league Soccer had 19 teams in 2014 and currently has 23 teams in 2018, and is planning to have 28 teams by 2022. Since 2014, Chivas USA (a team from Los Angeles) was dissolved, Orlando City SC (soccer club) and New York City FC (football, meaning soccer, club) joined the league. In 2017 Atlanta United FC and Minnesota United FC joined MLS. This season, 2018, Los Angeles FC joined and is believed by MLS fans to be a reincarnation of Chivas USA. Los Angeles FC is rarely called that. They are known as LAFC. The league has grown rapidly in the past couple of years.
The future of MLS is apparent. The only way from here is up. FC Cincinati, Inter Miami CF (club of football), and Nashville SC are all to join MLS by 2020. Detroit, Sacramento, San Diego, and St.Luis are all in consideration as cities to receive MLS teams.
Along with teams comes stadiums. Orlando City SC originally played at Camping World Stadium, but built and plays at Orlando City Stadium. New York City FC has played at Yankee Stadium, the home of the Yankees (yes… at a baseball stadium), but has placed a bid to league officials to receive their own home. Atlanta United plays at the new Mercedes Benz Stadium, that they share with the Atlanta Falcons. Minnesota United currently plays at TCF Bank Stadium, home of the University of Minnesota’s football team, but has a new stadium being built between the twin cities. LAFC built Banc Of Califonia Stadium so that they could play there at the beginning of this season, but due to delays, their new stadium home opener was delayed a month and a half. One of the league’s older clubs D.C. United also completed a brand new stadium this summer, Audi Field, after a spring and early summer of away games and awkward adjustments. The MLS is growing with more teams and stadiums to come.
D.C. United had Played at RFK Memorial Stadium the past 22 seasons but decided to not play there in 2017. With their new home to be completed in the summer of 2018, D.C. United had to find a place to play their home games at the beginning of the 2018 season. D.C. United played three home games at Maryland Soccerplex and one home game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. One stadium of 4,000 seats and the latter of a capacity of 34,000 fans. At the end of this stretch, D.C. found themselves at the bottom of MLS, by being the worst team in the league. On July 14th, 2018 D.C. played their first game at their new stadium, Audi Field, and Wayne Rooney an English soccer star played his first minutes as apart of D.C. United. With their new stadium and star, D.C. United propelled themselves up to the top half of the standings and into the Audi MLS Playoffs.
